The Peaceful Community Garden at Litchfield Montessori School

The establishment of a community garden is a result of a "positive action" proposal of the Litchfield Montessori School’s elementary students. The students decided to implement the garden after a six week curriculum enhancement study of conflict resolution and purposeful contribution. The study, The Art of the Peaceful Community, was guided by Victoria Christgau, Executive Director of the Connecticut Center for Nonviolence.

This positive action engaged the students in washing and painting picnic tables in the Northfield pavilion, clearing paths through the nearby woods and under the direction of Lower Elementary Directress, Debby DeGuire establishing the community garden. Families from the school and the surrounding community were invited to plant seasonal items and tend the garden throughout the summer months. This year the garden will yield pumpkins, root vegetables, and various flowers.
