Weekly Update Dec. 15 - Dec. 22

December 15th, 2023

We observe that a child occupied with matters that awaken his interest seems to blossom, to expand, evincing undreamed of character traits; his abilities give him great satisfaction, and he smiles with a sweet and joyous smile.

Connecting:

Remind -

To make it easier for you to connect with other parents in your child's class while maintaining some privacy, we now provide access within Remind for parents to send messages to each other. You can now communicate not only with faculty and staff, but with other parents in the class. Please respect the desire many of us have to limit the number of emails, texts, and messages we receive in a week.

Give to the Annual Fund

Thank you to all who have contributed so far!

The participation of every parent in our annual fund campaign is essential.  It shows that, as a community, we value and invest in our children's education. It also encourages outside donors and grant organizations to support us, as they see the strong backing by our own community.

Research finds more negative effects of screen time on kids

by NBC News

"In one study, researchers reported a link between screen time and higher rates of obsessive-compulsive disorder diagnoses among preteens. In the other, the results suggested that using electronic devices to calm youngsters when they’re upset may inhibit their ability to learn to soothe themselves, leading to more frequent, intense emotional outbursts."

Negative Effects of Technology on Children’s Social Development

by National University

"Technology has completely changed the way we interact with each other. Even as adults, we are more prone to send a text vs. make a phone call. Similarly,  we often behave differently on social media than we would in person. These differences aren’t exclusive to adults. When kids spend a significant amount of time on social media, it can lead to lower self-esteem. Teens are seeing curated content, a digital highlight reel, which can lead to distress due to teens comparing themselves to their peers.  In general, technology use can cause social and behavioral problems in children because it minimizes the amount of time kids spend interacting with others."
