Weekly Update Oct. 2nd - 9th

October 1st, 2026

“The reactions of children to various objects, the way in which, and the frequency with which, they used them, and the advantages which they derived from them, all gradually built up reliable criteria for the elimination, modification, and acceptance of apparatus to be used in our schools. Everything about these various objects – colour, size, shape and so forth were all determined by experience. ”
Maria Montessori
The Discovery of the Child, p. 101

  • Families are invited to contribute baked goods to our annual Bake Sale, which supports our Sixth Year Trip. Please drop off your contribution on the Friday before the event.

  • Parents are also encouraged to donate items for our Fall Festival door prize baskets.
This year’s basket themes are:
  • Countries and Cultures of the World
  • Exploration of the Natural World
  • Outer Space Exploration
  • Weaving/Knitting basket

  • We’ll also be holding a Winter Gear Swap! Families may bring gently used winter snow gear in very good condition to school beginning two days before Fall Festival. Please limit donations to snow boots, winter jackets, snow pants, and ski gear. No other clothing or hats, please. Come to Fall Festival ready to browse and take home something your family can use this winter!

Thank you for helping make Fall Festival a fun community event!

Annual Fall Festival

Join us for one of our favorite LMS traditions!

Our annual Fall Festival is Saturday, October 17, from 1:00–5:00 p.m.

Come spend the afternoon with friends and family and enjoy delicious barbecue from the Hindsight BBQ food truck, LIVE music from The Tradesmen, and all the fun of Fall Festival at LMS.

This year’s celebration will be especially meaningful as we gather at 3:00 p.m. to celebrate Grail and her retirement after her many years as part of the LMS community.

We hope current and alumni families will join us in showing Grail just how much she has meant to our school over the years.

Mark your calendars and come celebrate fall, community, and Grail with us!

Link the LMS calendar to your preferred electronic calendar to stay up to date on school happenings and volunteer opportunities.

Handbook Highlight:

Our Handbook Highlight draws attention to a section of the LMS Family Handbook that is especially helpful for families to know or revisit. While printed copies are available in the front office, our Family Handbook is a living document and may be updated throughout the year as practices or policies are clarified.

Insect Repellent Policy

At Litchfield Montessori School, children routinely go on outdoor adventures where they may be exposed to both sun and insects. As always, we aim to support the health and comfort of each child while respecting individual family choices. We advise that you send your child with sun protective clothing and administer insect repellent before school each day. We ask that you apply insect repellent at home. If you wish to do so at drop-off, please park and apply repellent on the lawn, away from other cars and families. A morning application will cover them for an entire school day. If you would like your child to reapply insect repellent during a field trip that goes beyond regular school hours, please fill out a form (provided prior to a field trip) pertaining to insect repellent. Do not send your child to school with the insect repellent. If you choose to send it for use on a trip, please bring it to the office in advance, clearly labeled with your child’s full name. Wrist bands or insect repellent stickers may be sent to school with your child and worn at school at parents’ discretion without filling out a form or sending those items to the office first.

We love the woods, but maybe not everything in them...

Please check your children nightly for ticks.

Although we think ticks go away with summer, adult ticks are actually out in full force in the fall.  We love to let our children play the woods and leaf piles, but that means we need to do our part to educate ourselves and our children.

Please find linked, two informative posters to start/continue the conversation with your child. It is important that even a small child knows to tell an adult if they feel any kind of bump/itch or creepy crawly that might be a tick.

*The school has a tick-twister, which is a very effective way of removing the whole tick.
