Weekly Update April 17 - 24

April 15th, 2026

The child's conquests of independence are the basic steps in what is called his "natural development". In other words, if we observe natural development with sufficient care, we see that it can be defined as the gaining of successive levels of independence.
Maria Montessori
The Absorbent Mind, p. 76

Sunscreen Policy Reminder

Sun Protection in the Young People’s Community: Our youngest children are not old enough to apply sunscreen themselves, have a sunshade for much of their outdoor play area, and go out the earliest. Therefore, a morning application by a parent or caregiver at home right before school is appropriate for a regular school day. If your child is willing to wear a hat and sun protective clothing, you may prefer not to apply sunscreen at all. Please reach out to the YPC Guide if you would like to make arrangements to reapply sunscreen during late morning.

Sun Protection in the Children’s House: If you wish to send in sunscreen for application prior to recess, please send a sun stick and practice self-application with your child at home. There is a mirror in the hallway outside the Children’s House classrooms at school; we encourage you to help your child practice using a mirror at home to notice whether they have covered their skin well. Children’s House faculty and staff will supervise the administration of sunscreen sticks appropriate to the age and development of the child.

Sun Protection in Elementary Classrooms: If you wish to send in sunscreen for application prior to recess or elementary outings, please send a sun stick and practice self-application with your child at home. Faculty and staff will supervise the administration of sunscreen sticks. You shared your expectations for sunscreen use with the school during enrollment; please share them with your Elementary child.

Do not send in sprays or lotions. Drop off your child’s sun stick, clearly labeled with the child’s first and last name, in the office. Children may not carry their sun sticks in their backpacks. After the office receives it, your child’s sun stick will be given to the classroom guide to be handed out prior to outdoor outings or recess per your instructions submitted during enrollmentEach child may only use sunscreen sent in for their personal use. For this reason, it is especially important that they are well labeled.

Friday, April, 17th:

6th Year Fundraiser - Plant Sale

Join us for a special Fruit Plant Sale in support of the 6th Year class fundraising campaign! Our students are excited to offer a thoughtfully selected variety of fruit plants sourced from Western Skye Organics Farm.

During a field trip last fall, students were invited to the farm to learn about organic gardening, pollinators, and different fruiting and flowering perennials. Our sixth years personally chose each plant variety with Western Skye Organics, making this sale a meaningful and hands-on part of their learning experience.

Don’t miss this opportunity to support our students while bringing home high-quality, locally grown plants for your garden!

Montessori Moment

“A child, who more than anyone else is a spontaneous observer of nature, certainly needs to have at his disposal material upon which he can work. ”
Maria Montessori
The Discovery of the Child

The grounds of LMS provide our children with the necessary materials they need to observe, explore, and experience nature.

This opportunity is accompanied with the exposure to nature's little pests.

What about tick PREVENTION?

Although the school has a tick-twister, which is a very effective way of removing the whole tick, there are ways to prevent ticks before they bite.

These safe, effective products are also recommended to families concerned with tick exposure:

permethrin

Insect Repellent Treatment for Clothing, Gear, and Tents

Effective against mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, and mites for up to 6 weeks

For use on clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear, Permethrin repels insects and kills mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, mites, and other kinds of insects on contact. Odorless after drying. Treat your child's clothing, gear, or shoes only. Do not send this product in with them to school.

picaridin

Topical insect repellent

Repels ticks, and mosquitoes up to 12 hours, and flies, gnats, and chiggers up to 8 hours.

Safe for the whole family, insect repellents with picaridin are more effective than DEET at repelling flies, ticks, and mosquitoes. It is long-lasting and can be applied to your skin
