Weekly Update April 5 - April 12

April 5th, 2024

Through practical exercises...the children develop a true “social feeling,” for they are working in the environment of the community in which they live, without concerning themselves as to whether it is for their own, or for the common good.

View the Solar Eclipse

NASA

Join us after school on Monday to watch the solar eclipse. The event itself will begin at 2:12pm, the height will take place just after dismissal at 3:25! Our coverage at peak is about 94%. We have glasses for children and may have a few for adults as well depending on the number who stay; to be sure you can watch safely, you might want to bring your own. Feel free to bring a blanket and watch together on the lawn. Children will be dismissed to parents at the normal times. Monitor your child with their glasses and make a judgement call based on readiness to determine whether they can use them safely under your supervision. We are not sending YPC children home with glasses and will not encourage them to look at the sun.

Wednesday, April 10th:

Community Circle, 6pm

Our April Community Circle will be a book discussion led by parent Kristina Luce, on "Hold Onto Your Kids" by child development expert Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D., and bestselling author Gabor Maté, M.D. Together, they delve into a pressing issue of our era: the growing trend of children looking to their peers for guidance, leading to challenges in family unity, hindrance in healthy growth, and the emergence of a troubling youth culture. Let's explore how this "peer orientation" affects our children, making them overly conformist, desensitized, and disconnected from their families, with a focus on being "cool" overshadowing their values and identity. A few of you have copies of the book, but, whether or not you've had the chance to read it, Kristina will give you the cliff notes version with some take-home ideas to think about. Note: the timing of this week's Community Circle was shifted to 6pm.
